Kappela (meaning Chapel)- Netflix – Malayalam 8/10
In the green hills and valleys of a small village in Kerala, the story winds around the 12th failed Jessi (Anna Ben) who helps her Mom with embroidery and stitching. Her strict dad works in the fields for the rich and the pious family manages frugally.
A wrong number gives charming Jessi a glimpse into the outside world and soon a friendship with a stranger, Vishnu (Roshan Mathew) blooms into more. Sweet nothings are exchanged throughout the day and give Jessi a reason to walk to the small chapel, more a shrine giving us a wide-angle view of the green valley.
Unexpectedly the village store guy decides to send a formal proposal sending Jessi’s family into a tizzy also giving her some space to escape to the town to meet Vishnu.
A beautiful outing is marred by a local jobless goonda Roy (Srinath Bhasi) when he follows them around and causes some drama.
Suddenly a simple love story unravels into a thriller. The stress and pressure are felt when we sweat along with Jessi in the small toilet she is locked in for a bit.
Director Muhammed Musthafa has shown us very well how easily small town girls can be fooled: a lesson we all know well about strangers yet get dragged into friendships.
