Leap Year is a 2010 Hollywood romantic comedy movie starring Amy Adams, Mathew Goode, and Adam Scott in lead roles. I have had this movie on my IMDb wishlist since 2016, and last night I finally watched it on Netflix.

As expected, it is a run-of-the-mill romcom. However, people who love to explore new countries might find the Irish countryside setting appealing to their senses. So, without more ado, let’s check out what the Leap Year movie is about.

Leap Year: Storyline

Anna Brady (Amy Adams) is a Boston-based successful real estate stager. She is a headstrong person and loves to live her life in a set pattern. She is the epitome of planning and perfect execution. Anna has a boyfriend named Jeremy Sloane (Adam Scott). Jeremy is on a trip to Ireland to attend a medical conference, and Anna decides to propose to him on February 29th, in Dublin, Ireland. Apparently, this is based on the Bachelor’s Day tradition of Ireland, where women propose to men on leap day.

So, she decides to take a flight to Dublin and spend a couple of days there before making her big move. She has everything planned to perfection. Interestingly, things didn’t go as per her plans and the airplane had to land in Cardiff, Wales. Somehow, she manages to catch a boat to Cork, Ireland. However, running short on time, she couldn’t make it any farther than the small village of Dingle. She reaches a small bar/inn and meets Declan O’Callaghan (Matthew Goode) and a couple of superstitious old men.

At first, Declan and Anna felt like poles apart in personality and behavior. But, as the movie progresses, we get to know them better. I am skipping the details here because this is something you need to experience yourself.

My Final Verdict & Rating

I am a big fan of all three leads featured in this film: Amy Adams (Superman), Matthew Goode (A Discovery of Witches), and Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation). While Amy or Matthew were at the center of almost every scene of Leap Year, Adam Scott had limited screen time to create any impact. Still, for the beautiful Irish countryside and good acting , I am giving Leap Year a 7 out of 10. The film is available in Hindi and English on Netflix. I always prefer the original language, so I watched it in English.

On a Lighter Note: Some Irish film critics and reviewers have slammed the movie for its typical stereotypical portrayal of Irish people, culture, and tradition. Many international critics have also complained about Matthew Goode’s accent. A large number of the general audience felt that Leap Year was a low-budget movie (which it is without any doubt). So, being an Indian viewer, in my view, as long as I get the English, I have no issues with the accent. Moreover, as far as the stereotyping of the Irish people is concerned, I am leaving it to the Irish people to decide for themselves.
