Jawaani Jaaneman – 9/10 – Theater: The title is a sensual song throw back from the 80s, hence the expectation was pretty low but from the word go the movie is a complete sell out. It starts with Saif and is Saif all the way.
Tabu is a low key role barely there just for a little while after the interval. Alaya Furniturewala (as Tia) takes one by surprise though and is definitely worthy of all the attention. Chiseled for the role and 10/10 on all counts.
The story is a back to earth calling for Jazz (Saif Ali Khan) who lives life to the fullest with his social life being clubbing, drinking, and ending the evening with someone new he meets. The music, remixes, and party scenes are loud, bright, and well made. The remixes have you humming and thumping the floor wanting to up and join the still agile Saif Ali Khan!
One such evening, he takes home Tia just to brighten the dimmed lights and switch off the romantic music…to be shaken from his drunken stupor to give in to her demands for a DNA test to prove he is her Papa! For someone in denial of his age to accept a 21-year-old as his daughter, discovering parental love and protectiveness is so beautifully portrayed.
Kubra Sait as Jazz’s hairdresser friend has an awesome role opening the friendship dimension as also proving that she is sure going places with her acting.
Then comes in Tabu as Ananya, the hippie with Rohan, Tia’s boyfriend from Amsterdam only to throw in more drama that’s almost not needed because at this point we are totally involved with Papa & Beti learning to handle the dynamics of their new relationship.
The movie doesn’t earn my 10 on 10 as it brings in a pregnancy and a shift from Dad to Dadaji way too soon for our hero, the solid hunk.. but it just adds a few extra laughs to the already funny movie.
