Jamtara – 10 Episodes Netflix – 8/10

An eye opener based on the crimes of 2015 that yet doesn’t disclose how exactly all the money on credit/debit cards that’s wiped clean reaches the scamsters as cash. We are far from right to assume Phishing scams, a word best known to the world of Cyber crime must come from the educated literate world from Masterminds who have a strategy planned from the word go. Uneducated juveniles, shrewd to learn to imitate accents fool the smartest of us to share with them card numbers and CVVs.

Jamtara, named after the town is a 10 episode serial, it’s not a documentary. It’s an entertaining and dark, figuratively and literally, highly offensive language and the extent of dismal life is unbelievable. Shown how it is in reality though where money is the change and only way out.. that doesn’t come easy.

Cousins Rocky (Anshuman Pushkar) and Sunny (Sparsh Shrivastav) put together a team of four others to scam the gullible. They soon are too big for their boots and need the protection of local goon and smooth talker political Brajesh Bhan (talented and versatile Amit Sial). Sunny marries Gudiya (Monika Panvar) and takes his planning to the next level while making enemies with his bro and the politician. It’s funny how Munna and Bachha constantly draw parallels to The Mahabharata in humorous light.

The legal investigation is well dramatised with Officer Dolly Sahu (Aksha Pardasany), Inspector Biswa (Dibeyendu Bhattacharya) and Saurav (Udit Arora).. The brutality in the cells has one cringing.

The ending which is predictable after the 8th episode is a little long drawn and mercifully the story hasn’t been diluted with horrors and crimes against women additionally.

Not a popular star cast and not a glamorous destination yet fascinating how the poor find ways to more than barely survive.

The World of Movies Rating 08/10
