Pooja Bhatt’s much awaited movie-Cabaret released on one of India’s biggest OTT platform, ZEE5 last month. The film stars Masaan sensation, Richa Chadha in the lead role and is loosely based on the one of the most successful  genre of dance in Bollywood-Cabaret.

Cabaret Movie Review

Cabaret 2019 movie is a ZEE5 Original. In my knowledge, this is perhaps the only Bollywood movie till date that is based on this dance form. But, unfortunately it fails to fulfill the promise it holds. After so much deliberation, Pooja Bhatt chose Richa Chadha as the leading lady for this movie. Earlier it was rumored that the film is based on the real life of the Queen of Cabaret dance-Helen. But after seeing the film, I can assure you that it is only a rumor and the movie has almost no connections to the life of Helen. Directed by Kaustav Narayan Niyogi, Cabaret is a romantic drama thriller dance film that draws no parallels to the life of Helen.

Cabaret Movie Story-line

The movie tells the story of a poor girl from Jharkhand who under unwanted circumstances rose to become a worldwide leading Cabaret star. It felt so easy in the film, but I am sure that in real life a simple girl from one of the backward states of our country can’t even think of it in her wildest dream. She meets Gaurav (Gulshan Devaiah, an Investigative Journalist), who wants to take her ‘in-depth’ interview. As she tells about her life to Gaurav, things take ugly turn. Her past comes to haunt her and she decides to leave him. On the other hand, Gaurav too discovers something that takes him back to his past and he plots a dangerous plan to complete an unfinished task. The rest you should definitely watch yourself as this film is worth your time, at least once!

Cabaret in Cabaret

The movie revolves around the life of a Cabaret dancer and all the songs have been beautifully choreographed and give a feel of the golden era of 1960s and 70s. Richa has performed extremely well and seems in place with her role when she is dancing. But when she is acting, she seems a bit out of place or should I say ‘a bit clumsy’. I believe she is a fine actor, but with no apparent reasons she tried a bit too hard in this movie and simply lost it. Gulshan Devaiah and S. Sreesanth have also looked a bit unimpressive and way too over expressive. The background score and songs are well composed and complement the premise of the film. But nowhere does the movie really touches in detail the Cabaret dance form except at the periphery. The film somewhat has a feeble plot and that is what kills its spirit. Cabaret movie doesn’t fulfill the potential of the character or the story.

My Verdict and Rating of Cabaret 2019 Movie

I am rating this film 7 out of 10 because of its promising but poorly acted and executed storyline that is somehow saved by an unexpected climax-something that you too will love at the end. So, I would suggest to go for it on a lazy afternoon as it is only one and a half hours affair.

Cabaret 2019 Movie Trivia

The principal photography was completed in 2015 and Cabaret film was scheduled to hit the silver screens in 2016. However, due to some reasons, the film never got approval from the Censor Board and never made it to cinema halls.
