“Kaafir” is an Arabic term for infidel or nonbeliever. The web series is based on a story of a Pakistani woman, who accidentally crosses the LOC and eventually lands up in a prison on the Indian Territory, for being an infiltrator and terrorist. Kainaaz Akhtar, the protagonist spends 7 years in prison and gives birth to a daughter too. But one day, an Indian lawyer-turned journalist Vedant attempts to learn the real story behind Kainaaz’s predicament and eventually unfolds the truth.

Inspired by real events, Kaafir attempts to inject hope, peace and goodwill within a system marred by hatred and prejudices. In other words, I would say that Kaafir is not a mere story of Indians and Pakistanis; rather it transcends the concept of borders and hyper-nationalism.

A new age, dark movie. So bold that it had me frowning. So well made that it had me cheering and so exceptional that it had me loving the flawed hero who doesn’t deserve or expect attention. The feminist in me did balk at the heroine, Kiara Advani, being taken for granted but it worked under the guise of med school ragging. I definitely expected a more glamorous lead actress and equally surprised at the subtle outfits and makeup of all the actors, art movie style subtlety.

This movie took me by total surprise.. liked it and enjoyed it and laughed at all the silly jokes and even felt the underlying pain felt by the parents of the child who can not feel pain. Losing his mom early and being brought up by an overprotective father, Surya, Abhimanyu Dasani, is fed on a diet of Superheroes by his Ajoba, Mahesh Manjrekar. Surya grows up in a secluded environment and is pretty messed up till a trip to the city and meeting his friend from his childhood, Supri, Radhika Madan just rights it all.

Irrfan Khan is outstanding and Saba Qamar has complimented him well. Deepak Dobriyal is very good at some places too, but his performance is nowhere close to Pappiji in Tanu Weds Manu. Amrita Singh is totally wasted in Hindi Medium. I was so excited to see her again after her superb performance in 2 States but she’s under utilized. The only thing that works and boy! how fabulously it works for the film is Irrfan Khan. His simple and earnest character is so realistic that it’s hard not to fall in love with him. He also has some great dialogues that he delivered perfectly. His speech at the end had something missing and didn’t click as much as it should have but full marks to his performance.
