While watching Ghosts of Girlfriends Past recently, I started thinking about an interesting movie trope/theme that doesn’t get discussed nearly enough. Even as a guy who reads a lot about movies online, I haven’t read such stuff. The film follows a living character who is guided by ghosts through different periods of his life, forcing him to confront his past mistakes and possible future consequences.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this storytelling device appears in many memorable films. Sometimes the guide is a ghost. Sometimes it is an angel. In other cases, it is a mysterious supernatural being that helps the protagonist revisit the past, glimpse the future, or experience an alternate version of reality.
These stories are fascinating because they allow characters as well as viewers to ask one of life’s biggest questions: What would I learn if I could see my life from a different perspective?
What started as a simple viewing of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past soon turned into the realization that dozens of movies share the same storytelling formula: a supernatural guide helping a living character see life through a different lens.

1. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009)

This is one of my personal favorites. Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) gains the unexpected ability to see and communicate with ghosts after a near-death experience. One particular spirit recruits him to help resolve unfinished business, leading Pincus on a journey of personal growth, friendship, and self-discovery. Like many films on this list, Ghost Town uses supernatural encounters to help a living character see life differently.
11. The Preacher’s Wife (1996)
When a struggling minister finds himself overwhelmed by personal and professional challenges, divine intervention arrives in the form of an angel named Dudley. Sent to help the minister and his family, Dudley quietly influences their lives while encouraging them to reconnect with what truly matters. Through his guidance, the characters gain a deeper understanding of love, faith, compassion, and purpose. Why We Love These Stories
Most of us have wondered what might happen if we could revisit our past decisions, witness our future, or see how life would have unfolded if we had chosen a different path. This is exactly what these movies are about. These films bring that fantasy to life through ghosts, angels, spirits, and other supernatural guides.
While each movie approaches the idea differently, they all share a common theme: self-discovery. Whether the lesson is about love, family, friendship, ambition, or redemption, the protagonist emerges with a deeper understanding of what truly matters.
Perhaps that is why audiences continue to connect with these stories decade after decade. Deep down, many of us would like the opportunity to step outside our lives for a moment and see the bigger picture—preferably before it is too late.
