While watching Ghosts of Girlfriends Past recently, I started thinking about an interesting movie trope/theme that doesn’t get discussed nearly enough. Even as a guy who reads a lot about movies online, I haven’t read such stuff. The film follows a living character who is guided by ghosts through different periods of his life, forcing him to confront his past mistakes and possible future consequences.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this storytelling device appears in many memorable films. Sometimes the guide is a ghost. Sometimes it is an angel. In other cases, it is a mysterious supernatural being that helps the protagonist revisit the past, glimpse the future, or experience an alternate version of reality.
These stories are fascinating because they allow characters as well as viewers to ask one of life’s biggest questions: What would I learn if I could see my life from a different perspective?
What started as a simple viewing of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past soon turned into the realization that dozens of movies share the same storytelling formula: a supernatural guide helping a living character see life through a different lens.
So, I decided to pen down an article for The World of Movies readers. Here are 15 memorable movies that use ghosts, angels, and supernatural guides to take their characters on unforgettable journeys.
1. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009)
Connor Mead (played by Matthew McConaughey) is a successful celebrity photographer who has built a reputation as a commitment-phobic womaniser. On the eve of his brother’s wedding, he is visited by the ghosts of former relationships who take him through his romantic past, present, and future. Inspired by A Christmas Carol, the film explores how Connor’s choices have affected the people around him and whether he can change before it is too late. 2. A Christmas Carol (2009)
One of the most famous examples of this storytelling device. Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) is visited by three spirits who show him his past, present, and future. The journey forces him to confront the consequences of his actions and ultimately transforms his life. Fans of this film may also enjoy our lists of Christmas movies for every taste and feel-good Christmas movies.
3. Scrooged (1988)
This modern retelling of A Christmas Carol follows television executive Frank Cross (Bill Murray). Like Scrooge before him, Frank is guided by supernatural visitors who reveal the impact of his selfish behaviour.
4. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
After reaching a breaking point, George Bailey (James Stewart) receives a visit from an angel named Clarence. Instead of showing George his past, Clarence reveals what the world would have looked like had George never existed. The result is one of cinema’s most uplifting stories. We have also reviewed It’s a Wonderful Life in detail for readers interested in exploring the film further.
5. The Family Man (2000)
A mysterious encounter transports successful businessman Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) into an alternate version of his life. With the help of a supernatural guide, he experiences the family life he might have had if he had made different choices years earlier.
6. Click (2006)
Michael Newman (Adam Sandler) discovers a magical remote control that allows him to fast-forward through parts of his life. As he skips important moments, he learns painful lessons about family, priorities, and lost time. Much like Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, the film uses a supernatural concept to explore regret, second chances, and the consequences of our choices. 7. A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
After surviving an accident that should have killed him, Royal Air Force pilot Peter Carter finds himself caught between life and the afterlife. Due to a celestial mistake, Peter is given an unexpected opportunity to continue living, but heavenly messengers soon arrive to correct the error. As he navigates both earthly love and supernatural judgment, Peter embarks on an extraordinary journey that challenges the boundaries between life, death, and destiny. The film remains one of cinema’s most imaginative explorations of fate and second chances.
8. Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941)
When boxer Joe Pendleton is mistakenly taken to the afterlife before his scheduled time, celestial beings realize a serious error has been made. Unable to return him to his original body, they arrange for Joe to continue living in a new one, setting off a chain of unexpected events. As Joe adjusts to his unusual circumstances, he discovers new opportunities, new relationships, and a fresh perspective on life. The film combines fantasy, comedy, and heartfelt themes about fate and redemption.
9. Heaven Can Wait (1978)
A modern remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan, this fantasy comedy follows professional football player Joe Pendleton, whose life is cut short due to a heavenly mistake. To make things right, celestial officials provide him with a new identity and a second chance at life. As Joe navigates unfamiliar circumstances, he begins to reassess what truly matters beyond fame and success. Blending humor, romance, and fantasy, Heaven Can Wait delivers an uplifting story about destiny, personal growth, and unexpected opportunities.
10. Ghost Town (2008)
This is one of my personal favorites. Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) gains the unexpected ability to see and communicate with ghosts after a near-death experience. One particular spirit recruits him to help resolve unfinished business, leading Pincus on a journey of personal growth, friendship, and self-discovery. Like many films on this list, Ghost Town uses supernatural encounters to help a living character see life differently.
11. The Preacher’s Wife (1996)
When a struggling minister finds himself overwhelmed by personal and professional challenges, divine intervention arrives in the form of an angel named Dudley. Sent to help the minister and his family, Dudley quietly influences their lives while encouraging them to reconnect with what truly matters. Through his guidance, the characters gain a deeper understanding of love, faith, compassion, and purpose. Blending fantasy, romance, and heartfelt drama, The Preacher’s Wife explores how a supernatural presence can inspire personal growth and strengthen human relationships.
12. If Only (2004)
Ian Wyndham (Paul Nicholls) is devastated after losing the love of his life, Samantha Andrews (Jennifer Love Hewitt), in a tragic accident. However, fate gives him an extraordinary second chance when he seemingly gets the opportunity to relive the events leading up to that heartbreaking day. As Ian revisits crucial moments from his relationship, he gains a deeper understanding of love, sacrifice, and the importance of cherishing the people we care about. Like many films on this list, If Only uses a supernatural twist to help its protagonist see life from an entirely new perspective.
13. The Lovely Bones (2009)
After her tragic death, Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) finds herself in a beautiful spiritual realm where she watches over her family and friends from afar. Unable to move on completely, Susie witnesses the grief, heartbreak, and resilience of those she left behind while searching for closure of her own. Through her observations, the film explores themes of love, loss, justice, and healing. Although different from many entries on this list, The Lovely Bones uses a supernatural perspective to reveal how life continues to shape and transform the living.
14. Heart and Souls (1993)
When four strangers die in a tragic accident, their spirits become attached to a newborn boy named Thomas Reilly. As Thomas grows into adulthood, the ghosts remain by his side, waiting for an opportunity to resolve the unfinished business that is keeping them from moving on. Together, they embark on a series of emotional and often humorous journeys that help both the spirits and Thomas gain a deeper understanding of life, relationships, and personal fulfillment. Blending fantasy, comedy, and heartfelt drama, Heart and Souls is one of the most charming examples of supernatural guides helping a living character see life differently.
15. Mr. Destiny (1990)
Larry Burrows (James Belushi) has spent years wondering how his life might have turned out if he had succeeded in a crucial high-school baseball game. One day, a mysterious bartender named Mike (Michael Caine) grants him the chance to experience an alternate version of reality where that single moment ended differently. As Larry explores the life he always thought he wanted, he begins to understand the value of the choices he actually made. Mr. Destiny perfectly captures the central theme of this article: a supernatural guide helping a living character gain a fresh perspective on his own life.
Why We Love These Stories
Most of us have wondered what might happen if we could revisit our past decisions, witness our future, or see how life would have unfolded if we had chosen a different path. This is exactly what these movies are about. These films bring that fantasy to life through ghosts, angels, spirits, and other supernatural guides.
While each movie approaches the idea differently, they all share a common theme: self-discovery. Whether the lesson is about love, family, friendship, ambition, or redemption, the protagonist emerges with a deeper understanding of what truly matters.
Perhaps that is why audiences continue to connect with these stories decade after decade. Deep down, many of us would like the opportunity to step outside our lives for a moment and see the bigger picture—preferably before it is too late.
