Venom: The Last Dance – A Disappointing Finale?

I recently watched Venom: The Last Dance. When Venom (2018) came out, I really enjoyed it. The concept of this superhero was fascinating to me. Normally, I don’t follow Marvel comics, but I enjoy the movies. Venom was a great experience. However, Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) felt just okay to me.

With Venom: The Last Dance, I had high expectations after watching the trailer. But after watching the movie on Amazon Prime, I was quite disappointed. The movie didn’t resonate with me. The main issue was the introduction of the villain, Knull, and his powerful creatures. The plot was set up with high stakes, but the execution felt lacking. The fight sequences didn’t live up to the expectations set by the plot.

The Strengths and Weaknesses

What Worked

While the action sequences, CGI, and music were fine, the chemistry between Eddie Brock and Venom was consistent and enjoyable. Eddie Brock, played by Tom Hardy, delivered another strong performance. It’s hard to imagine this might be the last time we see him in this role, as the movie suggests this could be the final installment. Fans are definitely going to miss the dynamic between Eddie and Venom.

What Fell Short

However, the movie overall didn’t leave much of an impact on me. I’d give it a 7 out of 10. If you’re a fan of the Venom series, you’ll probably watch this movie, but it’s best not to have too high expectations. You might enjoy it to some extent, but it may not be something you’ll love.

Future of Venom in Marvel

The post-credit scene, however, hints that Venom might not be entirely gone, leaving room for speculation about where Marvel might take the character next. It’ll be interesting to see if and how Venom reappears in future Marvel movies.

Box Office and Critical Reception

On the box office front, Venom (2018) grossed $856.1 million worldwide, with a production budget of approximately $100–116 million. Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) earned $506.9 million globally, against a budget of around $110 million. The latest installment, Venom: The Last Dance (2024), has garnered $478.8 million worldwide, with a production cost of about $120 million. Collectively, the franchise has amassed approximately $1.84 billion in global box office revenue, with total production costs estimated between $330–346 million. Despite the strong financial performance, audience reactions have been mixed, especially for the final installment.

Critically, Venom: The Last Dance received a 40% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews describing it as “an embarrassingly sloppy culmination for this unlikely franchise” and “bad on purpose.” However, some appreciated the continued dynamic between Eddie Brock and Venom, noting it as a highlight amidst the film’s shortcomings.

These figures highlight the franchise’s profitability, considering the combined production costs. However, it’s important to note that audience reception has varied across the series.
