Ek Chatur Naar Review: A Clever Idea That Doesn’t Always Stay Clever

I have watched many movies because of their twists. They seem to work because you genuinely want to know what the characters will do next, and Ek Chatur Naar manages to create that curiosity for a good part of its runtime. Then it goes dull, only to gather momentum again towards the climax. In fact, according to me, the climax is so “smart” and out of the way that I never saw it coming during almost the entire runtime. Our protagonist Mamta is not presented as a conventional heroine. She is practical, opportunistic and street-smart, and the film gets its best moments when it simply lets her figure out how to survive in a world where being clever is often the only advantage she has.

Directed by Umesh Shukla, Ek Chatur Naar follows Mamta, a financially struggling woman in Lucknow who gets hold of the phone belonging to a powerful and corrupt man. What initially looks like an opportunity to make some quick money gradually turns into something much more complicated, bringing blackmail, deception and revenge into the picture. The basic setup looked genuinely promising to me because the film places an ordinary woman at the center of a situation that could easily become dangerous for her.

Mamta Is Easily the Most Interesting Part

The film works best when it stays close to Mamta. She does not have the resources, influence or power of the people she gets involved with, so her intelligence becomes her weapon. That gives the character a slightly unpredictable quality because you are never completely sure whether she is making a desperate decision, taking a calculated risk or simply getting carried away by the possibilities in front of her.

Divya Khosla gets a role that demands a very different screen presence from a conventional glamorous lead, and she commits to Mamta’s world. There are moments where her performance feels deliberately exaggerated, but that also fits the film’s slightly heightened tone. I am always surprised by how and why she is not liked by the masses. Just to give an example, my office friend Gaurav simply said, “I can’t stand that woman.” Anyway, moving on, Mamta never feels like a typical Bollywood heroine who suddenly becomes impossibly clever because the screenplay needs her to be, even if the film occasionally pushes her intelligence a little too far.

Not Sure Whether the Thriller Is Better Than the Comedy?

Despite being promoted as a comedy thriller, I found that neither the suspense nor the humour is more effective than the other. The comedy often comes from the awkwardness of the situations and the characters involved rather than from genuinely sharp writing, and in many places, I felt it was force-fitted into the movie. On the other hand, the blackmail angle gives the film a stronger sense of momentum, but the movie rarely treats the situation with enough seriousness. The phone at the center of the story becomes more than just a plot device because it gives Mamta access to a world that she would otherwise never be able to enter.

Neil Nitin Mukesh does not leave much of an impression in the film. His performance often feels flat, particularly when the character needs to convey panic, fear or desperation, and that makes Abhishek less intimidating than the screenplay seems to intend. His character is powerful because of his position, but once Mamta gets something that can threaten him, that balance begins to shift, and the resulting cat-and-mouse dynamic is where the film finds some of its rhythm.

Where Ek Chatur Naar Loses Its Grip

The biggest problem is that the screenplay wants to be smarter than it actually is. I feel playing too cute sometimes kills the fun, especially when the film starts drawing attention to how clever its characters and twists are instead of simply allowing the situations to play out. Some twists are entertaining when they arrive, but the more the film tries to explain its own cleverness, the less convincing the overall construction becomes. A thriller can get away with asking the audience to suspend disbelief, but it still needs its major turns to feel earned.

The climax is where this becomes most noticeable. The funny thing is that I did not see the final direction coming at all, which is probably exactly what the makers wanted, but being unpredictable does not automatically make a twist satisfying. The film suddenly becomes “too smart and out of the way,” and while that gave me a genuine surprise, it also made me question how naturally all of this had been built up. That is why the climax works as a surprise for me more than it works as a payoff.

My Two Cents

Ek Chatur Naar is not a consistently sharp thriller or comedy, but somehow it manages to keep you more glued than its uneven execution might suggest. Its strongest quality is Mamta herself because the film understands that a woman trying to survive through wit and manipulation can be more compelling than another larger-than-life hero solving everything through power. The problem is that the screenplay keeps trying to make the story cleverer instead of trusting the character and the basic situation.

I would rate Ek Chatur Naar 7/10. It is worth watching if you enjoy Bollywood thrillers built around deception and blackmail, especially if you go in expecting a flawed, slightly old-school cat-and-mouse drama rather than a perfectly constructed mystery. Also, coming from Uttar Pradesh myself, I enjoyed the opportunity to see a slice of life from India’s most populous state, and that local flavor added something personal to my viewing experience. In the end, the film’s biggest irony is that it works best when it stops trying to prove how clever it is and simply lets Mamta be clever.
