Pati Patni Aur Woh Do Review: Don’t Let the Title Fool You

The title is the biggest trick this film plays on its audience. Pati Patni Aur Woh Do sounds like another remake or sequel to the 1978 classic and the 2019 Kartik Aaryan starrer. It isn’t. Instead, it is a small-town comedy set in Prayagraj that replaces infidelity with misunderstandings, local politics, and everyday relationships. If you walk in expecting another love triangle, you may leave disappointed. If you are looking for a light-hearted slice of North Indian life, the film has plenty to offer.

What Is Pati Patni Aur Woh Do About?

Prajapati Pandey (Ayushmann Khurrana) lives a peaceful life in Prayagraj with his wife Aparna (Wamiqa Gabbi), a journalist who unexpectedly lands herself in political controversy while chasing a story involving the son of an influential leader. What begins as a simple attempt to help a young couple soon snowballs into a chain of misunderstandings, public rumours, and awkward situations that slowly begin affecting Prajapati’s own married life.

Although the title suggests otherwise, the film has almost nothing in common with Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978) or its 2019 remake. The biggest difference is that this film never turns its hero into an unfaithful husband. Prajapati does not even think about betraying his wife. The comedy comes from mistaken identities and circumstances rather than extra-marital temptation.

Who Is in the Cast of Pati Patni Aur Woh Do?

Ayushmann Khurrana leads the film as Prajapati Pandey, while Wamiqa Gabbi plays his wife Aparna. Rakul Preet Singh and Sara Ali Khan complete the principal cast and fit comfortably into the film’s small-town setting.

The performances are among the film’s strongest aspects. Ayushmann, Rakul, Wamiqa, and Sara all handle the Allahabadi and Banarsi accents convincingly, and together they create a believable North Indian atmosphere instead of making it feel like actors playing dress-up.

My Review of Pati Patni Aur Woh Do

I’ll admit I may be slightly biased because the film is set in Uttar Pradesh, my home state. Even then, I believe my appreciation goes beyond nostalgia because the film captures the rhythm of small-town life surprisingly well.

Ayushmann Khurrana is now in his forties, and he remains one of my favourite actors. At this stage of his career, I also think he looks most comfortable in Delhi NCR and Uttar Pradesh-based characters. Whether it is Vicky Donor, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Dream Girl, or now Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, he brings an effortless familiarity to these roles that feels completely natural. Outside this space, I sometimes feel he loses a bit of that comfort.

The supporting cast deserves equal credit. Wamiqa Gabbi brings warmth to Aparna, while Rakul Preet Singh and Sara Ali Khan fit naturally into the story without anyone trying to dominate the screen. Their chemistry keeps the comedy grounded even when the situations become increasingly chaotic. The role of Tigmanshu Dhulia as Gajraj Tiwari is also worth mentioning and so are the performances by Ayesha Raza Mishra, Deepika Amin, Vijay Raaz and others. I felt that every character added something to this movie’s non-complex premise.

The music was another pleasant surprise. The songs have infectious beats and enough energy to make you want to dance, even if they may not remain part of popular playlists years from now. They work well inside the film and never interrupt its flow.

What I enjoyed most, however, were the little moments. The jokes surrounding Nilofar’s name, the references to her Hindu bua, and several everyday conversations feel like observations from real life rather than manufactured comedy. Even the animals, despite some weak CGI, seem intentionally exaggerated to match the playful tone of the film.

The humour also draws from religion, caste, corruption, and occasional sexism. Personally, I had no issue with that because these subjects continue to exist in our social fabric, whether the ruling party wants us to believe it or not. The film uses them as part of its world instead of pretending they do not exist.

The only area where I expected more was social commentary. There are moments throughout the film, especially towards the end, where it tries to say something meaningful, but those ideas never land with the same impact as Dream Girl (2019). The comedy remains stronger than the message.

Is Pati Patni Aur Woh Do a Sequel to Pati Patni Aur Woh?

No. It is not a sequel. Apart from the familiar title, the films share very little. The 1978 original and the 2019 remake revolve around a husband tempted to cheat on his wife. Pati Patni Aur Woh Do goes in a completely different direction and builds its comedy around misunderstandings rather than infidelity.

If you’ve already read my review of Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019), you’ll notice that this is the biggest difference between the two films. The hero here never even considers deceiving his wife.

Why Has the Film Divided Audiences?

The film had a disappointing theatrical run despite its star cast, but it has found a second life on Netflix, where it quickly climbed among the platform’s Top 10 trending movie titles in India as of July 26, 2026.

Many reviewers and viewers have criticised the film, and I understand why. At the same time, I also feel that audiences today often judge mainstream Hindi films through religious, political, or ideological lenses. Beyond jingoism and ultranationalism, people sometimes forget to enjoy stories that simply celebrate ordinary life. If, like me, you occasionally miss the warmth, humour, and chaos of small-town Uttar Pradesh, this film delivers exactly that feeling.

How Does Pati Patni Aur Woh Do End?

The film ultimately chooses trust over betrayal. Instead of turning Prajapati into another unfaithful husband, it resolves the misunderstandings by reinforcing the importance of honesty and communication within a marriage. That decision alone makes it fundamentally different from what the title initially suggests.

Is Pati Patni Aur Woh Do Based on a True Story?

No. The film tells an original fictional story, although many of its characters, situations, and conversations feel inspired by everyday life in North India. The cities and locations are all real. Even the car number plates are carefully chosen to give this movie authenticity.

After its theatrical release, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is now available to stream on Netflix. I missed it during its theatrical run, and Netflix gave me the chance to catch up with it.

My Two Cent: Is Pati Patni Aur Woh Do Worth Watching?

If you are expecting another Pati Patni Aur Woh, this probably is not the film you are looking for. However, if you enjoy Ayushmann Khurrana in small-town roles, appreciate everyday humour, and want a comedy that captures the flavour of Prayagraj, Banaras, and Uttar Pradesh, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is an enjoyable watch. 

It may not become Ayushmann Khurrana’s most memorable film, but it is certainly one of his most comfortable performances in recent years.
