Ghoul – Netflix Mini Series – Review

Ghoul is a landmark in TV series, especially being the second Netflix original from India. This has definitely set high standards for any other serial/series that follows, in the horror genre. Boldly blending Military, Terrorism, and Patriotism with the para normal that ends up convincing even the non believer in Ghouls.

Ghoul Acting and Fear:

Radhika Apte as a Military Interrogator has excelled herself, except for the accent which could have been fine tuned. Manav Kaul as the Colonel has proved his versatility yet again and has emoted beautifully. Ratnabali Bhattacharjee, the ruthless arrogant Major deserves applause. Mahesh Balraj in the title role is so good that you would rather not remember him at all.

The prison cells, costumes, music, as well as lighting complements the dread and trepidation well. The three episode mini series is just long enough to make you wish for the horrors to end before it gets predictable and repetitive. As symbols go, the symbol to call the Ghoul does seem a little weak though gory and drawn in blood as the folklore demands.

An expose of false patriotism taken to the next level like never before!

Gold Movie Review

Gold Movie Review:

I was proud to stand up twice for our National Anthem while watching the story of India’s First Olympic Gold win in post Independence era! One before the movie began and again when India wins the much coveted Gold medal in the movie.

In my view, Gold is a well directed/written movie that didn’t lose focus throughout its 2 hours and 31 minutes of running. It was action-packed, motivating, inspiring two and a half hours of only hockey – Our National Game! Something we have forgotten with time resulting in the inexorable decline of the game in the country .

Though this is not a first hockey movie to be made in India. It was still refreshing and charming in ways. I especially loved the fact that it did not make fun of the British Empire or Pakistan, that is often seen almost in all of Bollywood’s patriotism-themed movies. It has an easy going story-line and an effective plot that leads to a grand finale like climax.

Akshay Kumar as Tapan Das is looking adorable as well as authoritative at the same time. His stature as a versatile actor has been further increased with the success of Gold movie. Amit Sadh and Kunal Kapoor are total hunks and have acted so well that it won’t be wrong to say that they acted as the sails of the ship that Akshay was steering brilliantly. I am happy and satisfied that Mouni Roy and  Nikita Dutta didn’t have to shake a leg as item numbers to hold their own.

Enjoyed the music of Gold which has been made popular on the radio, also the short bits of dancing in the club, typical of pre-Independence era India. I must say in the end that it is a must watch movie for the patriotic goosebumps and pride that stays on even after leaving the theater!

Gold in every way is a golden movie.

Patch Adams Movie Review

Patch Adams Movie Review:

Patch Adams is a 1998 semi-biographical American film. It is based on the life of Dr. Hunter Patch Adams. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the movie stars effervescent Robin Williams in the lead role. Besides featuring Daniel London, Monica Potter, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in supporting roles.

With a good screenplay and and high-quality acting by the cast, Patch Adams is an absolute delight to watch. I particularly enjoyed the music and background score; it is beautiful and goes with the theme of the movie.

Before we jump to discuss the “Criticism”, the movie received over the period of time since its release, let’s have a look at its plot.

Storyline/Plot of Patch Adams:

Patch Adams is a man fighting depression and tries to end his life; there too he fails miserably. He voluntarily admits himself to a mental asylum. There he is touched by the despairing lives of patients and apathy of doctors towards them. At this point in his life, Patch thinks that he now has a “goal” in his dejected life–to become a doctor and help others who are suffering. He leaves asylum for a medical college after confronting with the supervisor.

At college, Patch becomes the top student despite being fairly aged compared to his fellow students. Gradually he makes friends at the college and subsequently starts his own clinic (without any proper Government and Medical Board’s approval). Patch’s life shatters when his close friend, Carin (Monica Potter) is killed by a psychopath. After this incident, Patch leaves everything despite his friends’ disapproval. He again tries to end his life but Monica’s memories give him a new spirit to complete his studies and continue the clinic.

Things take an ugly turn for Patch Adams as he is debarred from the college on charges of prescribing medicines without license. In the climax, he defends himself against the council and wins their trust to complete his studies. The film ends here!

Patch Adams movie has its funny, witty, and emotional moments that make it a must watch for any cinema lover. The last scene, where Patch Adams defends his case against the Medical Council is the best scene of this movie. It is perhaps one of the best acted piece of Robin Williams’ illustrious cinema career.

My Rating & Verdict of the Movie:

I am giving this movie a 9 out of 10, despite its flawed and deviated storyline (from the actual life of Dr. Hunter). The reason is quite simple; Patch Adams is a movie that delivers the message it want to convey in an absolutely fantastic cinematic way.

There are people who would strongly disapprove the idea of ‘treating patients with love and friendship’. But as far as I am concerned, I believe that Dr. Patch Adams’ ideas can make a huge difference to the normal “doctor-patient” relationship.

Patch Adams Trivia:

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., a 2003 Sanjay Dutt starring Bollywood movie seems closely inspired by Patch Adams movie. However, its director reportedly told media that he hasn’t seen the movie before the release  of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. Quite interesting, right? Once you see both the movies you will realize the similarities between them.

Is Sanju Movie Worth Watching?

Movie: Sanju                                                                 Director: Rajkumar Hirani

Year: 2018                                                                     Genre: Biography, Drama

Language: Hindi, English (some dialogues)

Before Sanju, the Sanjay Dutt Biopic was released many of us were thinking, “Should I watch Sanju”? “Is Sanju a biography based on truth”? or “Is Sanju just an effort to vindicate Sanjay Dutt”?

Well, I am not sure whether we can give answers to all these questions, but one thing that we are sure to answer is trying our best to give you a concise review of Sanju Movie.

The most awaited biopic and foreseen blockbuster of 2018 has already taken the Bollywood by storm. At the end of its 6th day, Sanju has already crossed 200 crore mark*. The movie seems as a lottery ticket for the theaters. Almost, all the slots are booked for Sanju.

Theaters are houseful for Sanjay Dutt Biopic, even in the second week!

I give it 9/10 for its wonderful script and excellent acting by Ranbir Kapoor, who has literally transformed himself into Sanju Baba (Sanjay Dutt). The background score too is good; one thing that was a little disappointing was the songs–they are just okay to say the most.

The Real Hero in The Sanju Movie:

For most part in Sanju, Sunil Dutt (Sanjay Dutt’s father) is portrayed as a hero and became a thought-slayer. In fact, he truly is an ‘unsaid hero’ on the screen as well as in his real life. He was a Johnny On The Spot and supported the nation bravely during the post Babri Masjid demolition riots that rattled many parts of the country in early 1990s. Today, a very few of us have knowledge of Sunil Dutt’s contribution during that dark time of our motherland. The cinematic legend is an equally great human.

About Direction of Sanju Movie:

The best part of Sanjay Dutt’s Biopic is it’s direction. Every scene in the movie gives you a travelling experience; travelling backwards to learn about  the unknown history of a worldly known face. It creates a perfect blend of mystery, drama, effects, and timeliness.

Cast:

Ranbir Kapoor is indeed the best choice to play Sanjay Dutt. After Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ranbir Kapoor has really given a performance of his life. Paresh Rawal, as usual steals the show. Manisha’s comeback in Bollywood after a long-time was a charm.

The not-so-smooth flow of the story became a reason to make people sit on the edge of their chairs, with same level of curiosity till the end. Sanju. One man.. Many lives is truly a fascinating character.

*By 11th November, 2018 Sanju has crossed INR 580 crore mark and is expected to reach INR 650 crore by the end of 2018.
