Movie Review “Badrinath Ki Dulhania” –

Last week, Kangana Ranaut accused this film’s prolific producer Karan Johar of nepotism. After watching ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ today, I’m inclined to believe that if Karan has to be accused of something, it has to be of being utterly derivative and unoriginal…

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge‘ (1995) – a film, I revered as a kid but can’t sit through today – has been the creative cow for the YRF as well as Dharma camp since the past two decades. Invariably, every YRF film still references the Aditya Chopra debut hit. KJo has built his own empire out of that very movie right from his ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998) which was basically ‘DDLJ’ set in Archie’s world to the recent ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania‘ (2014) which even had the same cast as this franchise follow up.

Undoubtedly, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan are hot property today. They are fine actors, look cute as a couple and suit their roles perfectly. Badrinath Ki Dulhania was probably conceived as a “project” to cash in on their current craze (Dependably, the Alia-Varun chemistry is super hot) while milking the same old formula of ishq wala love adding a tadka of dahej (dowry) ki buraai.

By the way, the dowry theme is directly lifted from ‘Daawat-e-Ishq‘ (2014), another YRF production. Infact, quite a few situations in ‘Badri..’ play out exactly as in that Aditya Roy Kapur – Parineeti Chopra flop.

There’s nothing more for me to write and whine about as you guys already know the plot, you know how exactly it will play out on-screen, you have heard and seen the songs on your tv/ smartphone (admittedly, Tamma Tamma remix is well recreated) and you know how it will end.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania offers nothing and I mean it, absolutely nothing new in terms of content. I guess box office revenues are the only thing that matter to Mr. Johar, originality and novelty be damned!!!!

Juan Charrasqueado 1948 Review –

“Juan Charrasqueado” (played by multiple-award winner, Pedro Armendariz) is the story of a Mexican ‘charro’, a countryside ranch man, who has just arrived from a long travel far away and meets at his hometown a lot of old friends and partners, which, now watch him suspiciously as a cocky, opportunistic and scrounger loudmouthed man. Once established again in town, he’ll be only busy playing cards at the “cantina” (bar), getting drunk and “enjoying” the pleasures of life, until he realizes he has a deep love with María (played by the beautiful Slavic actress, Miroslava). Unfortunately, Maria’s brothers have planned to marry her with a wealthy ranch owner. A real duel will start between Juan and the brothers of María, until he decides to kidnap her. Juan is having more and more troubles all around the town and people will plan to stop him doing always all what he wants. The results could be of fatal and terrible consequences.

The film takes us to the Mexican countryside of the 1940s with all the atmosphere it implies: women flirting, gossiping and having fun in the town center; ranch men betting at cockfights; singing, gambling and fighting at the “cantinas” and the multiple adventures struggling with drunk-men. A beautiful story is behind this scenario: the one of a real, traditional, Mexican “macho” who falls in love with the most beautiful girl in town. The main character will have to watch himself in the mirror, realize what does he can offer María and make strong decisions about their future. Decisions that could make arise the envy and hate of an entire town that is not disposed to tolerate outstanding demonstrations of foolish virility, more a result of a national complex than the noble reality it involves. The film offers an interesting perspective of the psychology of the Mexican “macho” behavior, so selfish and strong in appearance and so weak and sensible in his deep soul.”

Haraamkhor Review

Watched this movie especially for Nawazuddin Siddiqui who still considers himself as a struggling actor in Bollywood. If you are a fan of offbeat /real life kind of movies and love fine acting, you can spent your 95 mins on “Haramkhor”.The censor board first banned the theme saying in India a teacher is an esteem figure, and thus there is an issue with the depiction, in reality worse things can happen but according to them it can’t be shown on-screen and that’s why there is a big disclaimer at the beginning.

Shweta Tripathi who plays the female character did an awesome job, she is double the age she’s playing here but never felt that way. You will recognize her if you had seen “Masaan” which is another best of the offbeat movie series but Haraamkhor is Siddiqui’s film, watch it for him, watch it for what he can do and what more he is capable of…

Haraamkhor Rating & Verdict

Overall, I would give a 3/5 for the movie, that looks like it was made on the run, with not too much time or money for extra takes. Yet, amazingly the performances are uniformly good with Shweta Tripathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui presenting us with a disturbing relationship between a fifteen-year-old girl and her school teacher. Haraamkhor is a typical offbeat movie with all grey shades of life.
However, it’s this straightforward and blunt portrayal which made the situation more agitating showing how children can end up getting exploited secretly without the protectors /parents managing to get a sniff of it… Siddiqui’s performance takes an impulsive turn as the creepy, manipulative teacher which is well acted by him.

The abrupt ending of the movie is disappointing because it does not leave us with any memories of the characters we have lived within the film, It would be great if the conclusion of the movie was little more comprehensible.

Jolly LLB 2 – Review

Movie: Jolly LLB 2

Release Year: 2017

Country: India (Bollywood)

Language: Hindi (Standard)

Genre: Comedy, Drama

Jolly LLB 2 Review:

Jolly LLB 2, like Jolly LLB, is a courtroom drama where a novice fights for justice against a much senior big shot lawyer. Sequels hardly ever live up to the standards set by the first film and in this case it was already a tad disappointing to see Akshay Kumar as Jolly because Arshad Warsi had put his heart and soul in bringing the character alive in the first one. However, the promos looked fine, support cast seemed well put together and I hoped maybe it will be as good as the first one.

Since it’s a sequel to the 2013 film we all knew the basic outline of the plot. It’s impressive the way the director maintains suspense until the end – not the suspense of how the case will end but of how Jolly will win. He had so little going for him that audience is glued until the end, hanging on to the tiniest bit of evidence, wondering how the moody judge will react to the surprise witness or the tantrums of the shrewd defense lawyer, and waiting for another twist in the story.

Jolly LLB 2 Acting

Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor are both outstanding but I don’t think Saurabh Shukla will get a national award this time for his performance. Jolly’s friend Birbal and the corrupt cop Suryaveer Singh were good but there could have been more meat in their roles. Huma Qureshi is totally wasted in the film, her love for whiskey and Gucci is the only entertainment she adds to the film. Akshay Kumar is okay… He looks good in his cocky street smart avatar in the beginning and at the end but his sincere avatar in the courtroom is something we have seen many times before.

Jolly LLB 2 Final Verdict

Jolly LLB 2 has packed a decent amount laughs throughout but most of the comic moments are more ridiculous than witty. The fact that no lawyer wants to take up a case against the police and the scene when goons shoot someone in public yet no one comes to help touch a raw nerve. The judge practicing dance steps in the courtroom, big shot lawyer throwing tantrums and arguing with the judge, both sitting on dharna (strike/protest)… These situations are too ridiculous to be realistic. Overall there is too much unnecessary drama in the film. The songs are average and weaken the momentum created by the story.

Watch it if you have nothing better to do.
