Sully 2016 Movie Review:

Directed by Clint Eastwood, Sully is an adaptation of a book written by Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow. The film is based on the famous incident of “Miracle On The Hudson” where an US Airlines plane ended up landing on the water and without any causality on 15th January – 2009.

For Sully’s review I am not going to talk about the film’s storyline as everyone knows about this incident. I will rather focus on other cinematic areas and how Clint Eastwood has executed this story on the big screen.

The film’s starting sequence is great to watch and sets the tone for the movie. Although what follows next for about one and a half hour is not that “action packed” as you would expect from the first scene. But, then the movie is not supposed to show anything extra then what actually happened on January 15th 2009.

Clint Eastwood has kept everything simple and easy to understand for the audience. There is nothing over dramatic or constructed in Sully. The film follows the events as they occurred and tries to tell the “behind the scene” story of what actually prompted the Captain to land on water. Even the scene of landing on the Hudson river feels almost the replica of the actual footage of the incident. There was some criticism of Clint Eastwood for showing NTSB in bad light. But as a viewer I didn’t feel it. Yes, they are shown as professional and strict guys, but then this is their job and they were simply doing their job.

Why to Watch Sully?

Well, when you have Tom Hanks in the movie what else you would like to see? Yes, Mr. Hanks did it this time too. He looks awesome in those white hairs and mustache and you will love him in this avatar. Tom as Captain Sullenberger has literally carried the movie solely on his star prowess. Aaron Eckhart as Jeff Skiles has done a decent supporting job. Talking of direction, the camera work looks extremely decent. Editing is sharp and background score is slow but good enough. I liked the last part when Tom and Aaron are facing the public hearing that was an emotional and captivating part of the film. The manner in which Captain Sullenberger defends himself is worthy of watching.

The movie gives us a clear picture of what actually was going through the mind of Captain Sullenberger when he decided to land on water. It also shows his dedication towards his job and the human nature’s weakness as well as strong side. And, the most important of all “humanity is still alive”…

My Verdict & Rating:

I gave a thumping 9/10 to Clint Eastwood’s Sully. It is based on real events and they are shown with utmost truthfulness that I really appreciate. If you are a serious cinema lover then go and watch it. Just one thing from my side “Sully is a slow-paced film and you need patience to watch it”.

Larry Crowne Movie Review

Movie – Larry Crowne                                                       Release Year –  2011

Country of Origin – U.S.A                                                 Languages – English

Genre – Comedy, Drama, Romance

Before starting to talk anything about the film, I have to confess something. I am a huge fan of Mr. Tom Hanks and always have a sense of bias for him. The guy really deserves admiration and love. Anyways, I keep this topic for some other day.

Larry Crowne Movie 2011
Tom Hanks driving a scooter…

Larry Crowne is a sweet, simple and thoughtful romantic comedy stuff. It has nothing “extra ordinary”, but still grabs your attention and makes you laugh, cry and fill with all sorts of emotions. You can feel a bit of “you” in Larry’s character. That’s what I liked the most in the movie.

There are characters who feel so realistic, as if they are a part of our lives. Nia Vardalos is a fine and versatile artist and this time too she has written something worthy of praise. Not to forget Tom Hanks too is a co-writer of this beautifully directed and wonderfully choreographed film.

Larry Crowne Story-line:

The protagonist, Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) is a middle age man who loses his job just because he had no formal diplomas. He realizes that he paid the price of his shy and sober personality. So, he decides to go to a college for study.

Larry Crowne Movie 2011
Tom Hanks with his friend Talia...

Here, he meets Talia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a bubbly young girl who adds him to her gang. Larry suddenly starts feeling refreshed and works hard to achieve something. He studies hard and befriends his classmates.

Larry also develops a kind of romantic bond with his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), who has a troubled life because of her porn-addicted husband. The two, initially very distant to each other finally come close and develops a platonic love. There are a few other characters in the movie that help Larry in resurrecting his life. The movie ends with Larry starting his own small kitchen.

Larry Crowne Movie 2011
Julia Roberts as Mecedes Tainot.

My Verdict & Rating of This Film:

This movie has everything in it from classy acting to good back ground score. I rate it 9/10 and would recommend Larry Crowne to everyone not only because of Tom Hanks, but also because the movie is a good entertaining package. So, enjoy this movie and don’t forget to remember me.

Movie: Angels & Demons

Year: 2009

Country of Origin: USA

Language: English (Mostly) German, Italian and Latin (Few Dialogues)

Genre: Mystery, Thriller

Rating:

6.7/10 – IMDb    37% – Rotten Tomatoes   48% Metacritic

Angels & Demons Review:

I watched Angels & Demons twice only then I was able to understand it in full to be able to write a review of it. One of the major reasons for me to watch this movie was none other than Mr. Tom Hanks. Off late, I have become a huge admirer of his acting and really appreciate his movies. Now coming to the review of Angels & Demons, the movie is based on Dan Brown‘s novel of the same name. It is the sequel to the 2006 film, The Da Vinci Code, also directed by Ron Howard. The movie starts with the current Pope being dead and the conclave is taking place in Vatican City to choose the new pope. In the meantime the Camerlengo Patrick McKenna (Ewan McGregor) assumes the temporary control of the Vatican.

The Vatican is suddenly under threat from  an old enemy “The Illuminati“. The four “preferiti” have been abducted from Vatican City and the Illuminati gives the threat of executing all four of them hour after hour and also blowing up the Vatican City. Keeping in mind the gravity of the situation the Vatican looks to handle this situation and is eventually forced to call for an old critic of the Church, symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) from Harvard University to solve the mystery surrounding the abduction and killing of Father Silvano Bentivoglio (Carmen Argenziano) {Under whose watchful eyes  Dr. Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer) was doing research on getting the “Antimatter“}. Now Robert Langdon along with Dr. Vittoria starts his search to track the Illuminati as well as its plan to blow up the Vatican. After that whatever happen is worthy of watching. The plot builds up really well and at every moment you feel glued to the “adventure” of Robert Langdon. The acting in the movie is of top quality and there’s nothing you can complain about this aspect of the movie.

For me other than the acting and storyline one outstanding thing about Angels & Demons was its music/background score. It is just awesome and the credit goes to Hans Zimmer (who for me he is perhaps the best music composer of all time in this world). The music is very engaging and it gives strength to the story line. Now coming to the end of the movie, the end is really very thrilling and exciting. One will not be disappointed at all after watching this movie. I am also not telling the end of this movie here as I want you to figure it out yourself…about who the “Illuminati” was and how did Robert Langdon and Dr. Vittoria figured out this mystery. Overall thumbs up to Ron Howard for making this wonderful movie.

My Favorite Characters of Angels & Demons:

Tom Hanks (Robert Langdon): After so many years in the business, Tom Hanks has become a brand of his  own and in this film too he has delivered his best shot again. His acting and expressions are really commendable. If you are a Tom Hanks fan then this is one for you to watch out. Tom has carried his performance where he left in The Da Vinci Code.

Ewan McGregor (Camerlengo Patrick McKenna): Well, Mr McGregor is the dark horse of this movie. He has given a fabulous performance as Patrick McKenna. I can’t think of anyone else in his place after watching this movie. His character is important from the start of the movie but, it is in the last 15 mins that his true face is revealed and here the surprise element comes on for the viewer. I would rate his performance on par with Tom Hanks in this movie and when you are comparing someone with Tom Hanks then they must have done something to be compared.

The other cast including Aylet Zurer, Stellan Skarsgård, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Armin Mueller-Stahl have also performed excellently and are great to watch in this mystery thriller.

My Rating of The Movie:

I have rated Angels & Demons 9 out of 10. The reason is obvious a great star cast, wonderful music and an exciting plot. From the start to the last scene I couldn’t divert my attention anywhere, it was such a nice movie. By the way had I missed any scene I wouldn’t be writing a review about it, as it is a very intriguing movie that demands your presence of mind to understand it. May be this is the reason I watched it twice as on first time I was not that attentive.

My Verdict of The Movie:

It is very simple if you have already watched The Da Vinci Code then you must watch this one too, I am sure you will like it. And, if you have not watched The Da Vinci Code then also watch it as you can always watch The Da Vinci Code later on. If you are a Tom Hanks fan or you like mystery thriller movies then Angels & Demons is definitely worthy of your time.
