Hollywood So Far In 2016 – Expectations & Reality

Hollywood So Far In 2016 – Expectations & Reality

Like every year this year too there were a lot of Hollywood releases which had high expectations, but couldn’t deliver. While few movies which were initially thought to be as low key affair, unexpectedly made it big at the box office. As far as the collections are concerned till now, the top 5 highest grossing movies of 2016 are:

Captain America Civil War 2016 Movie
  1. Captain America – Civil War
  2. Zootopia
  3. The Jungle Book
  4. Batman vs Superman – The Dawn of Justice
  5. Finding Dory

Among the above mentioned films, “Batman vs Superman” received a negative review from the critics as well as the viewers. But, still it was able to earn more than 3 times of its budget. Mostly, due to the “hype” created around the movie. On the other hand “Captain America – Civil War” not only crossed $1billion mark, but also ruled the hearts of the people worldwide.

One movie that crossed the expectations given its budget is Ryan Reynolds starring “Deadpool”. The film was supposed to earn around $850 million world over and so far it has made around $780 million. With a budget of just under $60 million Deadpool has earned more than 12 times of its budget. The film holds an 8.1 rating on IMDB with almost half a million votes currently. “Zootopia” too was expected to gross $850 million internationally has surprisingly crossed $1billion. The movie got 98% on Rotten tomatoes which is a testimony of its commercial as well as cinematic success.

Now, talking about the films that disappointed us. Among the foremost are “Zoolander – 2” & “My Big Fat Wedding – 2”. Both the films have couple of things common between them. These sequels are released after more than a decade of their first part. They both were highly anticipated movies of 2016 and they didn’t live up to the expectations. Although, they made more than their budget, but still were not accepted by the audience in general. One more “sequel” that hit the screen in 2016 was “The Huntsman – Winter’s War”. Despite an experienced and powerful cast and all the marketing and media hype created around this film it can only be considered as “below par”. In general, we can say year 2016 wasn’t good for sequels. Except for few of them, all the sequels were either rejected by the audience or couldn’t make the impression that was expected from them.

“Independence Day – Resurgence” couldn’t even make the half of what was predicted out of it. Likewise, “Now You See Me – 2” although did a “modest” job in theaters, but by no way surpassed its first part commercially as well as popularity wise. Similarly, “Ghostbusters” couldn’t even cross its budget till the time this article was written.

Now, here are my top 5 movies that are yet to hit the screens in 2016 and what we can predict for them in revenue worldwide.

  1. Dr Strange – $700million
  2. Moana – $700million
  3. Suicide Squad – $712 million
  4. Rogue One: A Star War’s Story – $900 million
  5. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – $1 billion

It would be interesting to watch and see what these movies can bring to us and whether they will make their way into the Top-grossing movies of 2016 by the end of the year or not. Till then take care and enjoy watching movies…!

Kardeşim Benim – Movie Review

Movie – Kardeşim Benim        English Title – My Brother

Release Year –  2016                Country of Origin – Turkey

Language – Turkish      Genre – Comedy, Drama, Adventure

Kardeşim Benim Movie Review:

Kardeşim Benim (My Brother) is a refreshing, youthful and entertaining Turkish film. The film stars Burak Özçivit, Murat Boz and Aslı Enver in lead roles. Released in January – 2016 Kardeşim Benim is already the 2nd most successful Turkish movie this year. Mert Baykal’s direction is cool and Zafer Külünk‘s story is good enough to entertain you. Talking of the acting credentials of the cast Murat Boz and Burak Özçivit have done extremely well as “estranged” brothers.

Aslı Enver as Zeynep too is impressive throughout this comedy drama film. The locations are exotic and the countryside Turkey is charming. Murat Boz himself has sung for the movie and the songs as well as background music score is appealing.

Story-line of the film:

Now, let’s talk about the story of Kardeşim Benim film. Hakan (Burak Özçivit) and Ozan (Murat Boz ) are brothers both of whom are musicians, singer to be precise. Ozan, has made a name for himself in the Turkish Pop world and is a national star. While Hakan’s records have hardly done any business. They both don’t like each other and don’t want to see each other’s face. But, destiny has something else for them.

Due to the death of their father and his unique last wish Ozan and Hakan must travel to a faraway city to “sing together” like the old days they use to sing with their father. In the way they help an unfamiliar girl named Zeynep (Aslı Enver). Over the journey they become friends with each other. But, as the things were looking back to normal for the two brothers Ozan gets a shocking news. His pics are circulating in the media over the course of journey. And, he is threatened by his organizers that if he doesn’t turn up for the “concert” they will sue him.

Ozan decides to continue the journey despite of it. The twist in the journey comes when they find out that they have a “step sister”. Now, comes the real test of character and relationship for the brothers. Hakan decides to find out the truth while Ozan flies back to Istanbul for his concert after he learns that it was Zeynep (who by that time becomes Hakan’s love interest) who sent his pics to the media. Hakan too is disturb and feels cheated.

The film ends when the step sister Ayşe, needs urgent donor to recover from marrow cancer. Both the brothers come for help and one succeeds. Now, Ozan and Hakan again have a family as well as happiness as they once had.

My Verdict & Rating:

I rated this film 8/10. Kardeşim Benim is a bit different from ordinary Turkish movies. There is youthfulness in the film and the music is really cool. One good aspect was the film was its “unpredictability” the story although not too unique, but still keeps you interested all the way. So, my recommendation is to watch this film to get a taste of Turkish Cinema. I am sure you too will love this Turkish Delight… 🙂

Larry Crowne Movie Review

Movie – Larry Crowne

Release Year –  2011

Country of Origin – U.S.A

Languages – English

Genre – Comedy, Drama, Romance

Larry Crowne Review:

Before starting to talk anything about the film, Larry Crowne I have to confess something. I am a huge fan of Mr. Tom Hanks and aways have a sense of bias for him. That guy really deserves admiration and love. Anyways, we will talk about my love for Mr. Hanks some other day.

Larry Crowne Pics
Tom Hanks drving a scooter in Larry Crowne…

Larry Crowne is a sweet, simple and thoughtful romantic comedy stuff. It has nothing “extra ordinary”, but still grabs your attention and makes you laugh, cry and filled with all sorts of emotions. You can feel a bit of “you” in Larry’s character. That’s what I liked the most in the movie.

There are characters who feel so realistic, as if we too have them in our lives. Nia Vardalos is a fine & versatile artist and this time too she has written something worthy of praise. Not to forger Tom Hanks too is a co-writer of this beautifully directed & choreographed film.

Larry Crowne Story-line:

Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) is a middle age man who loses his job just because he had no “formal diplomas”. He sees that he paid the price because of his shyness and sober personality. So, he decides to go to college for study.

Larry with his friend Talia...

Here, he meets Talia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) a bubbly young girl who adds him to her gang. Larry suddenly starts to feel “refreshed” and works hard to do something. He studies hard and befriends his classmates.

Larry Crowne also develops a kind of romantic bond with his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts). Who has a troubled life because of her porn-addicted husband. The two initially distant too each other finally come close. There are lot other characters in the movie that helps Larry in resurrecting his life. The movie ends with Larry Crowne starting his own small kitchen.

Verdict & Rating of This Film:

This movie has everything in it from classy acting to good back ground score. I rated it 9/10, and feel it deserves this rating. I would recommend Larry Crowne to everyone not only because of Tom Hanks, but also because the movie is a good entertaining package. So, enjoy this movie and don’t forget to remember me.

Bangistan Review

Movie – Bangistan

Release Year –  2015

Country of Origin: India (Bollywood)

Languages – Hindustani (Urdu+Hindi), Polish & English (Few Dialogues)

Genre – Comedy

Bangistan Review:

I am sure by now everyone must have either seen or decided not to see Bangistan at all. And, the reason is obvious Bangistan is a small budget film that even failed to match its budget. The critics have literally abused Bangistan everywhere. People have made fun of Karan Anshuman’s “unique effort”.

But, if you trust me then Bangistan is not that bad a movie. It is a kind of “social experimental” in nature that awfully fails to create any impact on the society. The reason is quite simple to understand. This film has “exaggeration” everywhere in the script. The fact that it stars Ritiesh Deshmukh ( Hafeez Bin Ali/Ishwarchand Sharma) & Pulkit Samrat (Praveen Chaturvedi/Allah Rakha Khan) doesn’t help the cause either.

Story-line & Plot:

The movie is about a region called Bangistan that’s divided between North (Muslim Majority) & South (Hindu Majority). It is a satire on “fundamentalism” that exists in ample form in our present society. There is a conference in Karakow, Poland. The two religious leaders of North & South Bangistan decides to give a message of peace for the people of their country.

But, some people are not happy with their motive of peace. Al Kaam-Tamaam (North Bangistan) and Maa Ka Dal of (South Bnagistan) decides to send their “suicide bombers” to the conference. Hafeez Bin Ali a Muslim, disguises as Ishwarchand Sharma and Praveen Chaturvedi a Hindu, turns himself into Allah Rakha Khan.

Coincidently, they both stay at the same place in Karakow. Gradually, both explore the truth” about their respective religions from each other. Suddenly, there is a change of heart for Hafeez Bin Ali and he decides to stop Praveen.

My Rating & Verdict:

I rated Bangistan 7/10, and felt that it was a good effort by Karan Anshuman. But, it lacked maturity in narration as well as direction. Karan has dealt with a very sensitive topic of “Hindu-Muslim” in a comic way. And, I feel this is the reason it doesn’t go down well with viewers. The story too is light and hardly feels intriguing enough.

Anyways, if you have some free time and nothing worthy of watching. Then at least give Bangistan a chance. May be you will understand the lesson behind the satire which unfortunately most people didn’t…
