Vavien Movie Review:

Vavien is set in a typical Turkish middle class society and revolves around its problems. In the start of the movie one can easily recognize that whatever is happening in the lives of Celal (Engin Günaydın) and his wife Sevilay (Binnur Kaya) is not good. There is an atmosphere of discomfort and uneasiness between them although after being married for several years they still don’t trust each other and that results in a very complex situation for them which leads Celal to make a plan to get rid of his wife. He succeeds in his plan but his plan fails when his wife instead of dying  comes back to home. The camera work and screenplay is fine. All the characters have played their part well and the acting is really good especially by the lead characters. Background music is also good. The name “Vavien” has its significance in a way that it represents a circuit that is used to switch off two lights by the same button. Sevilay asks her husband to make a Vavien for her deputy but Celal replies that it’s difficult he can’t do it. In the end with the help of Cemal (his brother) he successfully makes a Vavien for the deputy and the film ends here with everything getting settle in the life of the couple after they talk to each other. The film gives a very simple message that it’s not impossible to solve any problem, but we need to work on it to solve it.

My Rating of Vavien:

I am giving this movie only 6 out of 10 as I believe it could have been better, in terms of story-line. Although the movie is intriguing but at times the viewer gets distracted from it. Overall, Vavien is good and presents you with a different point of view of Turkish Cinema.

My Verdict of Vavien:

Vavien is tough to digest with its unique story-telling. But, Vavien goes down well as a movie that is different from the league of contemporary Turkish cinema. It is a good to watch flick if you love World Cinema. I personally enjoyed it moderately, but loved the message given in this film.

Movie: Aşk Geliyorum Demez

Year: 2009

Country of Origin: Turkey

Language: Turkish

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Drama

Rating: 5.2/10 (IMDB)

My Review of Aşk Geliyorum Demez:

The movie takes place in the busy part of Istanbul i.e. Mahmutpasa and portrays the cosmopolitan culture and society of Istanbul. The character of Uncle Miran (Altan Erkekli) is an Armenian Christian and there is also a Kurd character. Despite of their racial and cultural differences all the shop owners and workers live a happy life together helping each other whenever the need arises. The music touches the heart and lyrics of all songs are very good. The character of Ali (Tolgahan Sayisman) in most part of the film is funny and careless but after the death of uncle Miran he becomes a man of truth and decides to tell the truth about himself to Gozde (Berguzar Korel). The screenplay and camera work is good. The story is too simple and easy to understand. Although it can also be said there is not so much story at all in the movie but still you like it as it never feels boring throughout the movie. The movie also doesn’t feature any unnecessary “sex or steamy scenes” that are very common in Turkish cinema. It is a plain Love Story. In the end it can be said its worth watching. For me the music was the main element of the film. The filming locations are also good where you can feel the excitement of Istanbul. All the characters have acted well, but it can be said that there are some unnecessary characters in the movie. Anyways, in a comedy lot’s of characters are very usual in any cinema.

My favorite Characters of Aşk Geliyorum Demez:

Tolgahan Sayisman as Ali: He has played his role with perfection a little funny, idiotic, but always engaging.

Berguzar Korel as Gozde: She has spread the charm of her beauty on-screen as she often off-screen. In most part of the movie she is serious and happy girl looking to get “true love” in her life.

My Rating of Aşk Geliyorum Demez:

I have rated this movie 9/10 as I found the story ordinary, but still good enough to behold you. The Music is the best element of the movie and reaches your heart. The shooting locations are beautiful and captivating and makes you feel good watching this movie.

My Verdict of Aşk Geliyorum Demez:

If you are looking to watch some lighthearted comedy themed love story then this will appeal you. Something ordinary but “engaging”…..The songs are beautiful and I am sure you will fall in love with them.

Welcome To Karachi – Movie Review

Movie: Welcome To Karachi

Language: Hindi & Urdu

Rating:

4.5/10 – IMDb

Welcome To Karachi Review:

Before writing anything about the movie, I would love to emphasize the fact that it is a “Political Satire“. However, it may not be the best of “Political Satires” that we have seen till now. But, keeping in mind the films that have hit the screens this year so far, it is definitely one of the best till date. Now coming to the film, it can be said conspicuously that it is has a totally “illogical” story-line. But, as this is a comedy what else would you expect? The ending of Welcome To Karachi is really very “unsatisfying”. One would have been wondering actually what happened to “Shami and Kedar”? The visual effects of this movie are just “okay” there’s nothing to tell about it. The music is fine although not too great. The main “USP” of the movie is its cast. Be it Arshad Warsi, Jackky Bhagnani, Lauren Gottlieb, Adnan Shah, or Ayub Khoso. All the characters have played their role very well. Even, the small characters too have given awesome performance. Among the scenes that I like the most is the one that happened outside the Indian Consulate Office in Karachi. It may be an exaggerated scene with no reason and logic but, it conveys a very clear message in the form of “stupidity” that how today’s “International Relations” are going on. Every country is jealous of its rival and want to “eliminate” it. The move also sheds a light on “American” involvement on Pakistan’s land and how things are manipulated. The truth is not always what we see, it differs from person to person. I am happy to see that this movie doesn’t promote any “ultra nationalism” or “hatred”. The director has dealt well with a weak but, comic story-line. For me Arshad Warsi was the one who really carries the movie along on his shoulders. Arshad is well-known for his ‘comic” roles in Bollywood and once again he delivered it well in “Welcome To Karachi”.

My Rating of Welcome To Karachi:

I have rated the movie 9 out of 10 mainly because of its small but powerful punches of “dark political satire” and some awesome acting by the cast. With just over 2 hours this is a wonderful comedy film to relieve your mind of all the tensions you may have.

My Verdict of Welcome To Karachi:

If you like some “lighthearted” cinema that make no sense. But, gives you entertainment and lot’s of funny moments to laugh about then go for this. I bet you will not be disappointed. Just forget the “logic part” and enjoy the movie…! Anyways there’s very little logic in India and Pakistan relations!

Three Kings – Movie Review

Movie: Three Kings (1999)

Country of Origin: U.S.A

Language: English, Arabic (Few Dialogues Only)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, War

Three Kings movie is set in 1991 Iraq after the end of Gulf War-1. The movie competently portrays the situation of  the region after the end of Gulf War-1, when the “uprising” takes place against the rule of Saddam Hussein in southern Iraq. The movie tells how after the end of the war nobody including USA ( supposedly the savior of the region in that war) was caring about the people, who were brutally suppressed, looted, tortured, and killed by the Iraqi Army.

All that everyone was caring about was to get their hands on the “gold” that Saddam’s Army has looted from the Kuwaitis. Even the media, which is supposed to be “neutral and unbiased” was thinking of getting more and more stories and not helping the people.

What I Liked About The Movie:

Three Kings gives an idea about the political situation of Iraq during that time and how the “inconsistent” US foreign policy has affected the lives of millions of people including “pro-Saddam and anti-Saddam”.

The screenplay is very good and the locations used for filming Three Kings movie look genuine. The story has a comical way too and it really keeps you on your toes till the end. The actors have performed really well, and it can be said everyone has done justice to their roles. The background music is also good but can not described as great like in many other war-themed movies.

Characters To Watch Out In Three Kings:

Archie Gates (George Clooney): Mr. Clooney is a special actor whom you can’t describe well enough, knowing his range and versatility. Throughout the movie, it is his character that has a resounding presence on-screen. He takes the limelight away from other co-stars.

Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze):  He is an idiotic but nice at heart person. His only wish is to go back to the US and earn a decent living there. He takes the center stage when it comes to doing comedy in the film. His body language and dialogue delivery are immaculate.

My Rating & Verdict Of Three Kings:

I am giving this film 8 out of 10. The main reason for this is that it is not a one-sided story. The film shows both the sides of the coin. It is especially evident in the character of “Said”, who while torturing “Troy” speaks things that hit our brains. The character of TV reporter Adriana Cruz is also very though provoking and gives an insight of how media handle things. Her dialogue in the end, “why this war happened in the first place she doesn’t still understand it” sums up all.

Although it can’t be denied that Three Kings at some places exaggerated many things, but it is expected as it is a commercial cinema. If you are looking to see an action-packed drama movie that has comedy as well as emotional punch in it, then Three Kings is a must watch. In the end, you will also get to know how things can be made better by properly managing conflicts anywhere on this planet.
