“Mistress America” Movie Review – From Boring Start To An Eventful End.

Movie: Mistress America                                                               Release Year: 2015

Country: United States of America                                               Language: English

Genre: Comedy

Mistress America Review:

Directed by Noah Baumbach, Mistress America is a movie that feels boring in the start before gradually gripping your interest. It stars Lola Kirke and Greta Gerwig in lead roles with Heather Lind, Matthew Shear, Michael Chernus and, Jasmine Cephas Jones in supporting roles. The film has some nice cool music score and the direction is great. Screenplay is written by Noah and Greta herself which looks nice with no fumbles.

Lola and Greta they both have looked extremely good in Mistress America. I am watching them for the first time and it’s difficult for me to tell who was better than the other. But, I slightly feel Lola (the chief protagonist) of the film has been fantastic with her body language and looks (of a college going girl with lonely life).

Storyline:

Tracy (Lola) is a college student and lives a low life that’s not exciting rather boring and dull. One day she gets a call from her mother who tells that she is soon going to marry with some man. The man has a daughter named Brooke Cardines (Greta), a confident self-sustaining and stylish women who is in early 30s.

Tracy decides to meet Brooks and after spending a night with her and knowing her aspirations and lifestyle becomes very influenced with her. Brooks want to open a restaurant for which she is getting investors. But, all of a sudden her whole plan is jeopardized as one of her partners pulled out of the plan. At this juncture Brooke has no other option but to seek help from her ex-fiance (Dylan) who is married to her best friend (Mamie).

Meanwhile, Tracy has written  a short story titled “Mistress America” for her college’s literary society. Tracy helps Brooke to reach Connecticut with her friends Tony and Nicolette. Things were on course before Brooke receives a call from her dad stating that he is no longer marrying Tracy’s mother.

Mistress America Movie
Tracy & Brooke Looking For Solutions of Their Problems…

The newly formed bond between the “stepsisters to be” is further shackled when Brooke finds out that Tracy has written a story on her life. Tracy explicitly denies that it is written after her rather says it’s a work of fiction “inspired” by Brooke. Something Brooke doesn’t agree to and the two break up.

The story gets published in the journal and Tracy is happy and confident now. On thanksgiving she visits Brooke and asks her to spend the occasion with her which she agrees. The movie ends here with two sitting in a restaurant and enjoying the evening together. As written in Mistress America, Brooke’s dream of having a restaurant never gets fulfilled as she pays her debts off and decides to move West to Los Angeles. As for Tracy, things look pretty optimistic as she leaves her old literary society and decides to start her own one.

My Verdict & Rating:

Mistress America may not be a memorable piece of cinema but it is nonetheless worthy of watching. The film makes you laugh and think at the same time. It is not that typical “haha hehe” comedy movie but a carefully crafted one that uses humor as a supporting element to the overall theme. Mistress America gets a flat 8/10 from me.

Movie: Hunt for the Wilderpeople                              Release Year: 2016 (Worldwide)

Country: New Zealand                                               Language: English

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Adventure

Hunt for the Wilderpeople Movie Review:

After reading about its success and praises showered by the critics to its director. I decided to watch Hunt For The Wilderpeople and for once the praises were right. Directed by Taiku Waititi, Hunt For The Wilderpeople is a much sought breather of a cinema in today’s movie world. The film despite having few characters and very limited storyline is a good piece of cinema to watch.

Hunt-for-the-Wilderpeople
Aunt Bella Embracing Little Ricky To Her Home.

There are many aspects in the movie that grabbed my attention such as high quality acting by the protagonists (specially Julian Dennison), great picturization showing the audience New Zealand’s enchanting countryside landscape, some Māori inspired music, couple of nice songs and yes “Haiku”. As for what’s a “Haiku” means it will be more interesting for you guys to find it out yourself after seeing the film.

At the time of writing this review this film has already become the highest grossing New Zealand movie of all time in the country. Not surprisingly, it is still playing worldwide so it will garner more money in coming weeks. That will make it more successful commercially than already it is now. The film’s director Taiku Wakiti is already in the news for being chosen by Marvel to direct Thor: Regnarok (2017). Well, only time will tell how he does that job.

Now coming back to Hunt for the Wilderpeople let’s see what’s the movie is about?

Storyline:

The film is beautifully divided into 10 chapters that makes it interesting to watch. It feels as if you are reading the book in an animated way. Ricky Becker is a 13-year-old fat kid. He is troublesome and notorious. Child Welfare Services (For whom he is a real “Bad Egg”) chooses a new home for him where he meets a kind-hearted woman Bella (who asks him to call her aunt even though she isn’t his aunt really). Bella’s husband a former convict Hec (Sam Neill) isn’t much happy with her decision to adopt Ricky to live with them. Unfortunately, for Ricky things get worse when Bella dies and Uncle Hec asks him to go back to the welfare department. But, Ricky is not ready to go back that juvenile center and is adamant to live with Hec.

Julian Dennison as Ricky Baker in Hunt for the Wilderpeople

There is a kind of animosity between two and the adventure begins when they are forced to work and live together while the whole country is after them. This part of the film is really watchful and appeals to you emotionally in a very subtle humorous way. It shows different shades of humanity as Ricky who is an orphan just want to live free of state’s interference and Paula (the officer) is unwavering in her pursuit of him. Her dialogue “Not a Single Child Left Behind” conveys multiple meaning to the audience depending how you want to interpret it.

In the end, after trying his best Ricky and Hec has to lose against the government authorities. The army finds them and Hec is sent to a jail. While Ricky is send back to the welfare department. But, Ricky gets a new home and he goes to Hec asking him to accompany for another adventure this time not to run away from the authorities, but to find the supposedly extinct “Huia” bird that they saw in the jungle. Hec gladly agrees and the two goes to jungle again.

My Verdict and Rating:

Hunt for the Wilderpeople gets 8/10 from me because of the awesome acting by young Julian Dennison and some awesome portrayal of New Zealand’s exquisite beauty. If you are looking to see some cool adventure stuff, then go for it. This is a good piece of cinema that every movie lover will love. So, don’t wait anymore and watch Hunt for the Wilderpoeple ASAP..!

“Sully” Movie Review : Chesley Sullenberger’s Tale Touches The Heart

Movie: Sully                                                                           Release Year: 2016

Country: U.S.A (Hollywood)                                                Genre: Drama, Biography

Language:  English

Sully 2016 Movie Review:

Directed by Clint Eastwood, Sully is an adaptation of a book written by Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow. The film is based on the famous incident of “Miracle On The Hudson” where an US Airlines plane ended up landing on the water and without any causality on 15th January – 2009.

For Sully’s review I am not going to talk about the film’s storyline as everyone knows about this incident. I will rather focus on other cinematic areas and how Clint Eastwood has executed this story on the big screen.

The film’s starting sequence is great to watch and sets the tone for the movie. Although what follows next for about one and a half hour is not that “action packed” as you would expect from the first scene. But, then the movie is not supposed to show anything extra then what actually happened on January 15th 2009.

Clint Eastwood has kept everything simple and easy to understand for the audience. There is nothing over dramatic or constructed in Sully. The film follows the events as they occurred and tries to tell the “behind the scene” story of what actually prompted the Captain to land on water. Even the scene of landing on the Hudson river feels almost the replica of the actual footage of the incident. There was some criticism of Clint Eastwood for showing NTSB in bad light. But as a viewer I didn’t feel it. Yes, they are shown as professional and strict guys, but then this is their job and they were simply doing their job.

Why to Watch Sully?

Well, when you have Tom Hanks in the movie what else you would like to see? Yes, Mr. Hanks did it this time too. He looks awesome in those white hairs and mustache and you will love him in this avatar. Tom as Captain Sullenberger has literally carried the movie solely on his star prowess. Aaron Eckhart as Jeff Skiles has done a decent supporting job. Talking of direction, the camera work looks extremely decent. Editing is sharp and background score is slow but good enough. I liked the last part when Tom and Aaron are facing the public hearing that was an emotional and captivating part of the film. The manner in which Captain Sullenberger defends himself is worthy of watching.

The movie gives us a clear picture of what actually was going through the mind of Captain Sullenberger when he decided to land on water. It also shows his dedication towards his job and the human nature’s weakness as well as strong side. And, the most important of all “humanity is still alive”…

My Verdict & Rating:

I gave a thumping 9/10 to Clint Eastwood’s Sully. It is based on real events and they are shown with utmost truthfulness that I really appreciate. If you are a serious cinema lover then go and watch it. Just one thing from my side “Sully is a slow-paced film and you need patience to watch it”.

Stay tuned for many more reviews to come your way…!
